Kontiomäki introduction
Conveniently located next to the Neste Kontiomäki service station alongside Finnish National Road 5 (Viitostie), BestPark Kontiomäki takes good care of its caravanners with a wide variety of services available for guests. Just next to the three-plus caravan park guests will find a 250-seat restaurant serving up delicious meals, a K-Market supermarket selling local products and a gift shop selling handicrafts and design products from Kainuu.
The Vuokatti Tourist Information Centre, which offers a wide range of activities and opportunities for sightseeing, is just a short drive from the park. Our guests can embark on a memorable hike to the heart of the Hepoköngäs nature reserve, where you will find one of Finland’s best-known waterfalls. Located in the Rokua Geopark, Lake Oulujärvi is home to stunning islands and sandy beaches that are the perfect setting for a family holiday. There is plenty of greenery and natural tranquility with forests accounting for nearly 80% of the region’s land area.
In Kainuu, you might even get the chance to meet Finland’s national animal, the bear. At the Hossa bear-watching hut, you can safely watch and take photos of bears living in their natural habitat in the wilderness between Hossa and Juntusranta. Guests can spend an evening at the hut or even stay overnight. With any luck, you might also spot other local carnivores, like wolverines and wolves, in addition to bears.
Kainuu is also well-known for as a great spot for golfers. The region boasts three golf courses: one in Sotkamo, one in Kajaani and one in Paltamo. They say that in the summertime, Kainuu’s golf courses are world-class, easily standing up to courses abroad. You can also golf all year round at the Kajaanin Tennishalli indoor sport facility. Kainuu is a perfect destination for anyone looking to try their hand at golf, tennis or other sports for the first time.
At the height of summer, regional culture flourishes with a host of local events: Kajaani Poetry Week, the Kuhmo Chamber Music Festival, traditional Finnish “lavatanssit” dances in Jormua and Naapurivaara, as well as the Kajaani Town Theatre and Art Museum all ensure you have plenty to choose from and enjoy in terms of local culture!
